We will be enforcing size guidelines, in order to give the shows a better look, and to avoid overcrowding. These sizes refer to the OUTSIDE EDGES OF THE FRAME

  • 3 pieces allowed 11 x 14 or smaller, (area of 154 square inches or smaller), each piece. Square inches are measured by multiplying the length by the width of the outside edge of the frame.
  • 2 pieces allowed at 24 x 30 or smaller, (are of 720 square inches or smaller).
  • 1 piece allowed larger then 24 x 30, with maximum size of 40 x 40, (1600 square inches).

Sizes may be figured by adding two adjacent sides, so smallest no bigger than 25 (11+14), middle size 54,(24+30), and largest – when two sides greater than 54 but not larger than 80 total.

2019 Tangier Shrine Feztival of Trees - a festival with a fez and a mission!

We did it! Omaha Artists Inc. sponsored a tree for the 2019 Tangier Shriner's Feztival of Trees! Ornaments were donated by Carl Monico of Spotlight Auctions back in 2018 to OAI through his friend, Linda Jones. The members and friends of Omaha Artists Inc. spent many hours painting ornaments. We even enjoyed what we called 2019 Christmas in July; we gathered to paint ornaments, enjoy visiting with each other and a luncheon served by the Olive Garden Restaurant! The painting of ornaments continued throughout the year with Linda Jones collecting the painted ornaments each month.

The Tangier Shriners host this event each year to help raise money to transport children and their families to the hospital and other like projects in the Omaha area. Thousands showed up to place bids on the 68 trees donated by sponsors in November. Tree Number 3 was proudly displayed as 'The Artful Tree by Omaha Artists Inc', bearing well over 200 ornaments, ribbon, lights, a one-year-OAI membership certificate and donated gifts. How do we begin to say thank you for making this project possible? ....the time and energy of those painting the ornaments, decorating the tree and Linda Jones storing, loading and hauling the ornaments, and tree as well as $100 in gift certificates donated by Sherry Reese, a pet portrait commission $100 gift certificate, the tree itself, stand and angel donated by Linda Jones, and a Lionel Diesel battery powered model train ($100) donated by Mike Jones, Linda's brother. Omaha Artists Inc. – you are the BEST! Mission accomplished!

Neva Cozine IMG 1784

Our Spotlight Member Article this month is Neva Cozine. This section is meant to get to know each other!

Tell us about you?

I am in Nebraska because my dad was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base and my sister and I were in college at the time when the rest of the family moved to the next assignment. So we are here in Nebraska and Kansas. I met my spouse in graduate school; we have two children. One of my jobs, I was employed as a graphic designer.

Tell us about your history with Omaha Artists Inc?

I have been in Omaha Artists Inc. about 18 months and am a Fun Shop Co -chair. I love talking to others about art, and it is an organization that seems to be looking for ways for people to enjoy their art, grow creatively and enjoy others who are artists.

How did you get involved in art and what is your favorite medium?

Involved always! I love watercolor.

What is a little-known fact about you?

It is so little-known that even I don't know it!

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I love to work around my house. I recently painted the walls of my “art room” and added those cool shelves to display art.

What are your travel experiences?

I have been all over the world, but now travel every year to see our son in California and daughter in Massachusetts.

What are you known for?

Not sure of this. Note: A member who wishes to remain anonymous, says Neva Cozine is known for her contagious happy spirit and her willingness to help!

What skills would you like to learn?

Working with ink and watercolor.

Has anything or anyone changed your life?

We lived in Japan for 3 years when I was in junior high. That impacted my taste in art and love of the Japanese culture.

What is your favorite quote or saying?

My mother said “Never throw away dirt.”

President's Message for November

Let’s talk turkey…no, nothing to do with bowling 3 strikes in a row and nothing to do with name-calling even though we do use the words ‘stuff it’ while quitting cold turkey and singing it’s all about that baste!

This month, we pull out our favorite recipes and buy magazines with new recipes we may wish to try for our turkey dinners. Thanksgiving dinner in this country is traditionally turkey, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie. Have you ever wondered if the Pilgrims had the same menu in 1621 as we do today? Was turkey the meat served? Did they even have sugar and flour to make cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie? Did they have sweet potatoes with marshmallow topping?

While you are looking at your favorite recipes and perhaps reading recipes from your grandmother’s recipe box, keep in mind you may wish to submit these recipes to be published in our cookbook! Check out the recipe entry form in this newsletter! Don’t forget we have an art show in November – photos will be chosen for our cookbook.

We have another date to keep in mind for November! We have the Feztival of Trees, November 23- November 30 held at the Tangier Shine, 2823 South 84th Street here in Omaha. OAI has sponsored and donated a tree decorated with our own painted ornaments under the leadership of Linda Jones. Help us decorate that tree November 21st and win a free ticket to go to the soft opening at the drawing on 20th!

Each November finds the members of OAI enjoying a potluck meal, fellowship and the making of greeting cards for the upcoming year. This year we gather on November 20th. Barbara Mathewson is Courtesy Chair: throughout the year, she sends cards to those who are grieving a loss, someone who is ill, welcoming, thanking or praising. If you know of a member of our group who might enjoy receiving a card, please notify Barbara. We appreciate Barbara’s diligence in making someone’s day a little brighter!

November is a time not only for turkey but, a time of thanking those we appreciate. There is something about this time of year being surrounded by people who love and care about you. Let’s share the love and appreciation for each other as we consider the past and the present.

May all your wishbone wishes come true!

---Katie Johnson-President
Omaha Artists Inc.

Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgiving, turn routine jobs into joy and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.
