I call my style abstract realism. Realism because the observable subject is the physical source for what is present; abstraction to convey what is not physical. Changing light, wind, tricks of the eye cause perspective to advance and recede. Humidity, the season, all is change. A little abstraction helps.
I work in my studio, sometimes starting with reference photos, sometimes starting with a remembered image. It all changes after the first realistic layer. Paintings I like best happen when I get courageous and “have at it”. Scraping, layering, wiping out, drawing and dripping, seeking the hidden quality of what was evocative in the first place.
